Struggling with a Debt?

Don’t panic—you cannot be put in gaol in NSW because you cannot pay a debt.  You have rights.  Get advise quickly.

Warning:

Never pay any money towards a very old debt, or a debt which you do not believe you owe without getting legal advise first.

Financial Counselling

What is it?

Provider

a quality free confidential service that is not linked to financial institutions.

Includes:

counselling, information and options, negotiation, advocacy, education, personal finance management and referring.

Financial Counsellors act as a watchdog of consumer industry practices and identify emerging sources of consumer difficulties.

Educating: 

the vulnerable and disadvantaged in the community.

 

What isn’t it?

Does not provide financial assistance.

Does not have all the answers.

Does not offer a quick fix—changing your situation requires commitment by you.

Budgeting

Aims of group sessions:

  • Learning how to complete a workable money plan

  • Taking control of your financial situation

  • Knowing where your money goes

  • Knowing how much things cost weekly/fortnightly

  • Clarifying your priorities

  • Making decisions regarding individual choices with money

Your plan is individual.

It has to work for you. 

Working in a face-to-face situation

  • Options of methods to approach creditors seeking a moratorium on payments, together with freezing of interest to enable you to stabilise a financial situation while preparing a repayment scheme for creditors consideration.

  • Increasing awareness of how and when to cut down on spending. Endeavouring to establish a margin to offer creditors.

  • Providing you with the skills to develop and use a budget.

The Anglican Counselling Service seeks to provide support and an understanding of personal problems, but encourages clients to become as independent as possible and ultimately take charge of their own financial affairs.

Financial session are a free and confidential service provided by the Anglican Counselling Service through funding from the NSW Office of Fair Trading

Financial Counselling is available at the ACS Tamworth and Armidale Counselling Rooms.
