Is Gambling a Problem for You?

Statistics show that 2% of the Australian Population are problem gamblers, it is on the increase.  From 1975 - 2001, there was an increase of 3.71% in problem gambling in Australia and 40.9% of gambling expenditure in Australia occurs in NSW.  A report from Victoria in 1997 shows that many gamblers began from the age of 8 to 13 years.

If a gambling problem is not addressed it can lead to poverty, domestic violence, drug abuse, alcoholism and even gaol.

How can you know if you have a problem

There are a number of indicators, some of which are:-

  • Gambling more than you can afford to lose

  • Borrowing money from friends, family, banks and loan sharks to gamble

  • Selling family or personal assets to gamble

  • Losing time from work or study to gamble

  • Arguing with family over your gambling habit

  • Feeling guilty about the amount of money gambled

  • Chasing losses to win back money

Who can Help?

G-line (NSW) is a help line where telephone counselling is available 24 hours per day for problem gamblers and their families.

The Anglican Counselling Service also provides face to face counselling for problem gamblers and their families, to help manage short and long term behaviours.  There are also several Life Skills Courses available.  The service is funded by the NSW State Casino Community Benefits Fund from the Department of Gaming and Racing.
