At first glance, it may seem like a somewhat unusual alliance, The Anglican Counselling Service (ACS) and West’s League Club. However, these two organisations have in fact been working together for a number of years to try and address the issue of problem gambling in the region.

This week has been declared ‘Responsible Gambling Awareness Week’ in NSW and so both organisations are keen to publicise the fact that there is help available for those who struggle with their addiction to gambling and who would like to overcome it.

ACS receives funding from the NSW Attorney-General’s Department to provide counselling services for problem gamblers, while West’s have regularly contributed to the cause, by making their facilities available to ACS (at no charge) for various workshops and training days etc. The management at Wests are also aware that statistics have shown that because of their constant exposure to gambling, those who work in the club industry would seem to be at a greater risk of becoming addicted to it. Management of the club are therefore keen to provide on-going training for their staff to not only help them identify patrons who may have a gambling problem, but also to equip them with the information they need to protect themselves from allowing gambling to become a problem in their own lives.

The two organisations have also expressed their concern in regard to the latest research which has revealed that problem gambling is 10 times more prevalent within indigenous communities than it is in the wider community. Consequently, they are working together to try and address this situation by once again providing training and assistance to those adversely affected.

Anyone wanting to know more about how they can get help for their gambling problem is welcome to contact the Anglican Counselling Service on 6701 8200, Centacare on 6762 1783 or Gambling Help on 1800 858 858
