Anglican Counselling Service all under one roof

Saturday 25th of July 2009

The Tamworth headquarters of the Anglican Counselling Service (ACS) is now all under the one roof.

Welcoming over 100 guests to the new premises at 34 Denne Street, ACS Executive Director, Larry Apthope, said the new office had been a long time in the making, but was worth the wait.

"A tribute must be paid to all those involved in bringing the new premises to fruition," he said. "In particular, staff must be thanked for their amazing effort over a long journey."

Board Charman, Graham Truscott, said the work of ACS was to help people on a sometimes difficult journey. "ACS is a counselling service, first and foremost, and covers a wide area," he said. "The long-running drought has set a basic need, and the current recession has spiked that need. ACS provides not only counselling, but also education, of which there is a real need in this area. Preventative medicine can help build relationships, mostly through the efforts of voluntary work," he said.

The Bishop of Armidale, the Rt Rev Dr Peter Brain, said counselling was a growth industry. "In this world, at opposing ends of the spectrum we have the pessimist, and the optimist, and according to them, both are right," he said.  "We should be neither pessimists, nor optimists, but rather realists.  Forgiveness (of one another) is the most therapeutic idea in the whole world. Well known theologian Dr Arch Hart, said we should have a Happiness Scale where we write down five  things we are grateful for, as it is very hard to feel envy and bitterness when we are grateful.

Bishop Peter said counselling servcies should consider working out a model on thankfulness.

Thanks were paid to St Paul's Anglican Church for their generosity over the years for the provision of the Ebsworth Street buildings.

In declaring the new facility open, Bishop Peter said it was a joy to do so.

From very humble beginnings, the Anglican Counselling Service has grown over some 23 years to the organisation it is now.
