Anglican Counselling Service secures funding for Aboriginal project

Wednesday 22nd of August 2007

The Anglican Counselling Service (ACS) has been successful in obtaining further funding from the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, which will enable the Service to continue its work in the Coledale community until June 2010.

The Executive Officer of ACS, Larry Apthorpe, said a counsellor had been working in the Coledale community for over 10 years.

“Two years ago, ACS were successful in obtaining Federal Government funding, which allowed it to commence the Family Violence Service – a project aimed at addressing the problem of family violence in the area,” he said.

“This funding has enabled ACS to appoint a part-time Aboriginal Liaison Worker, Kate Green, to embark on a programme aimed at educating community members about the problems caused by family violence, and ways to reduce it.”

One of Kate's many programmes at the moment is in partnership with the Coledale Community Centre's Youth Service and its Boxfit Program, a 10 week programme aimed at educating many of younger residents of Coledale, on the benefits of exercise and teaching them practical boxing skills, together with anger management techniques.
