Limit of 50 Places for Mental Health First Aid Workshop

Wednesday 2nd of May 2007

A two day mental health first aid course, hosted by the Anglican Counselling Service (ACS) will be held in Glen Innes on 18th and 19th June 2007.

The Counselling Service has conducted this popular course in a number of centres throughout the region and the response has always been very favourable. Some of the responses given by previous participants include ‘ really worthwhile’, ‘excellent’, ‘a privilege to be here’, and ‘interesting and informative’.

The workshop is to be presented by Fay Jackson, a well known advocate for mental health education. Mrs. Jackson is CEO of ‘Vision in Mind’ Consultancy, which is a company that delivers training and education to workplaces and educational institutions. She is a nationally renowned motivational speaker on mental health and has been invited to address parliament on a number of occasions. Previously to owning her own company she was the director of Consumer and Carer Affairs with the Illawarra Mental Health Service.

The aim of the course is to increase community awareness about mental health. It does not teach people to be therapists. Rather, it teaches how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and support and how to go about guiding a person towards appropriate professional help. It is estimated that 20 per cent of the population will experience mental health problems in any one year.

Topics covered include overview of mental health problems in Australia, depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis and how to assist a suicidal person or a person having a panic attack.

There is a limit of 50 places at the Course and it is presented without charge courtesy of funding from the Australian Government. To register your place, please ring the ACS on 6765 2527. The course will be held at the RSL Club in Grey St. from 9.00am – 5.00pm each day. Full attendance is required to obtain a certificate.
