Manilla Family Support Service to Close

Thursday 7th of May 2009

Lack of Funding Forces Closure of Local Family Support Service

The Manilla Family Support Service (MFSS) which was established by The Anglican Counselling Service (ACS) in 2006 is to close it’s doors for the last time on the 15th May.

ACS Project Manager, Bruce O’Hara, said today that despite the best efforts of the Service, they had been unable to convince the Federal Government to continue the funding.

“We know that our Support Worker, Haidee Lea, has played a vital role in the community assisting many young families, over the past 3 years, so it is very disappointing that her good work has to come to an end simply because of a lack of funding,” Mr O’Hara added.

The MFSS has operated a number of programmes, including Playtime in the Park, a weekly Breakfast Club and After School Club at Manilla Central School and a weekly Mum’s Group.

“ACS will continue to seek out funding opportunities which might enable us to continue to assist those in the community who may be in need of support,” Mr O’Hara said.

If ACS is able to secure new funding, they will be on the lookout for a new employee, as Haidee has indicated she is ready to ‘put her feet up’ for a while, as she contemplates her next challenge.
