Quirindi Mental Health First Aid Course is Full

Friday 5th of May 2006

The Anglican Counselling Service’s Executive Director, Rev. Brian Kirk says the popular Mental Health First Aid Course which is be held in Quirindi on 19, 20th June has reached its limit of 50 participants with still 7 weeks until the event.

Course participants from Warialda and Tamworth have said about the presenter, Fay Jackson that she is “real”, “always interesting”, “ first hand knowledge and openness”, “personal stories balanced with educational component and humour”.

Another participant said “Fay’s ability to share her personal experiences enabled me to better understand Mental Health illnesses and break down the stigmas”.

The aim of the course is to increase community awareness about mental health. It does not teach people to be therapists. Rather, it teaches how to recognize the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to go about guiding a person towards appropriate professional help. People with mental health problems are “normal” people who happen to be sick.

The Anglican Counselling Service congratulates the NSW Farmers for their Blueprint for Maintaining the Mental Health and Wellbeing of the people in regional and rural areas of NSW.

The ACS supports the Blueprints recommendations and has been active making available to the communities of the New England and North West of NSW Mental Health First Aid training at no cost to participants.

By education, the Service hopes to build resilience and increase the capacity of the people in our rural areas to cope with the pressures identified by the Rural Mental Network and reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses.
