Responsible Gambling Awareness Week

Wednesday 30th of April 2014

The impact of problem gambling has far-reaching and significant consequences for individuals, families and communities. Some of the effects include financial loss or bankruptcy, relationship breakdowns, or health problems such as depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, ulcers, high blood pressure or suicidal thoughts.

What we want to do is encourage people to keep an eye out at work for a mate. Somebody in your workplace could be struggling with gambling, and the opportunity is there to let them know that help is available and that they don’t have to go through it alone.

Through supporting and helping your colleagues or employees address their problems before they reach crisis point you can be part of the problem gambling solution and help make a difference in the wider community.

There are more than 50 organisations across the state delivering the NSW Government’s Gambling Help counselling program to communities and all offer free and confidential support and treatment. A Gambling Help Financial Counsellor is also available at ANI as is information on accessing free legal assistance.

If you want more information or if there is somebody in your workplace who you are concerned about, contact Anglicare on

(02) 6701 8200, Gambling Help on 1800 858 858, or visit www.gamblinghelp.nsw.gov.au.

As part of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) during 26 – 31 May, Anglicare Northern Inland is offering to deliver a presentation to Tamworth businesses about the free support services available.

The workplace is a practical channel to reach people with gambling problems as well as their family, friends and colleagues .
