Family Support Service Commences in ManillaThe enthusiasm of a team of representatives from local community groups - and a recognition by the Federal Government that there are a number of families in Manilla in need of support, has led to the commencement of a Family Support Service in the area. Mrs Haidee Lea has been appointed by the Anglican Counselling Service to head up the project which is operating from premises at 114 Manilla Street. One of the aims of the project is to connect parents and families to information and social support services. It will also attempt to give families the confidence to form new friendships and participate in community activities, which should result in better outcomes for children and families and greater community participation. Another of the aims of the project is to build social networks and community life by engaging older people as volunteers to support young families. Mrs Lea will also be available to visit families in their homes to try and help reduce the isolation experienced by many. The project has been initially funded for 3 years, however it is hoped that additional funding will be available to enable the assistance to be on-going. Mrs Lea is excited at the prospect of being able to help make a positive contribution to the lives of families in the area and she can be contacted on 6785 1702.
